Chia Ying Kao

Chia Ying Kao, originally from Taiwan, is an independent dance artist based in New York City since 2004. She recently received her MFA degree in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College where she earned the Bessie Schonberg Award in 2012. Her work has been presented at the Center for Performance Research, Chen Dance Center, Page Auditorium Theater at Duke University, Queens Public Library Auditorium, Northport Library Auditorium, Tribeca Film Festival, Manhattan's Union Square for a dance installation, Rouelette NYC, Radio City Music Hall in a collaboration with Yung Yung Tsui, and the Taipei Cultural Arts Center and Hualien Cultural Arts in Taiwan. Chia Ying has collaborated with important choreographers, dancers, and institutions such as Sara Rudner, Yvonne Rainer, Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Paz Tanjuaquio, Hou Ying, Yung Yung Tsuai, Chinese-American Arts & Culture Association, the Panoramasian Dance Project, New York Chinese Cultural Center, Chinese Theatre Works and Earl Mosley Diversity of Dance among others. 

Chia Ying is the recipient of the 2012-2013 Topaz Arts Choreography Residency Program and was invited to take part in the 2012 International Choreographers' Residency at the American Dance Festival-Henan, China. In April 2013, Chia Ying premiered a new work “The Strange Wait” originally commissioned by Ear to the Ground program of  NY’s Chen Dance Center. In June 2013, Chia Ying was selected to participate International Choreographers' Residency at the American Dance Festival where she developed her work “Gateways”. Recently hired by Brooklyn Arts Council as a Teaching Artist, she continues exploring multiculturalism beyond herself with the artists she works with and with local community input.
