Christiana Axelsen
My choreographic interest lies in the possible intersections between dance and theater. I am currently investigating the simultaneous presentation of the two art forms, the ways in which dance and theater can coexist in time and space, independent from each other, providing open and infinite interpretations of the relationship between kinesthetic and narrative elements within the stage space.
Originally from Bainbridge Island, Washington, Christiana Axelsen is a Brooklyn based choreographer, performer and teacher. Her most recent work, Tundra, was shown as a part of the Upstart Festival at BAX, the Women in Motion Salon Series, the Works in Progress Series at Dixon Place, and at the Irondale Center as part of Movement Research's Open Performance Series. She received a grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council to create a full-length version of Tundra that will be shown at the Invisible Dog Arts Center in June 2013. She collaborated with theater artist Seth Powers to create Money Thinks I’m Dead as part of a 2012-2013 residency at Mabou Mines. Christiana has been a member of the contemporary dance company zoe | juniper since 2005. She was featured in their most recent work A Crack in Everything that premiered at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, was presented at New York Live Arts, and is touring nationally. She recently performed with Michou Szabo/The Mill in The Wildheart at Gavin Brown's Enterprise and will be in Michou's newest work this fall. She has danced with Anne Zuerner, Mana Kawamura/Kawamura the 3rd, Raja Kelly/the feath3r theory, Korhan Basaran, and Dai Jian among others. Christiana graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in dance and geology from Mount Holyoke College. She received the Chris Komar Memorial Scholarship to attend the Professional Training Program at the Merce Cunningham Studio where she performed as a guest alongside the Repertory Understudy Group. She is honored to be on faculty at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange.
