cullen+them is an inter-generational performing arts organization making socially-conscious work and building empathetic community. Led by artistic director Hannah Cullen, cullen+them houses both an adult performing company and a professional company of young artists, young dance collective (YDC). YDC was founded in 2001 as a collaborative choreographic company for young people and joined cullen+them at the time of its formation in 2016.
cullen+them’s mission is to foster active and compassionate exchange through dialogue, artmaking and performance. Both companies create work addressing social justice and interpersonal issues, using conversation as a starting point and grounded in speaking and movement based mediums. Cullen’s work has most recently appeared in the Theater of the Resist series at the Met Breuer and at A Pop-Up Festival: #americanAF. Her work oscillates between the highly physical and highly pedestrian, bringing an honest human experience to the stage. For the past 3 years, Hannah has worked for feminist author and activists Gloria Steinem and Amy Richards, deepening her knowledge of feminist history and what it means to be an organizer for a social justice movement.
