Valentine Amartey has been designing in New York since the year 2000. He started out pulling double duty in the performance troupe The P.Cult, as performer and designer. Inspired by the fire-eaters, acrobats and burlesque girls, he set about making costumes that reflected the wild tribal style of the group. His first pieces were snapped up by Shakira. Seeing this as a good omen, Valentine decided to dive deeper into design and develop his craft. Since then Valentine has made costumes for Lady Gaga and Brooke Candy, developed knitwear for Calvin Klein Collection and Marc Jacobs, and for four years, occupied the position of machine knitting professor at The New School in the MFA fashion program. His work has been featured in Interview magazine, Paper and Gayletter. These days Valentine’s designs can be seen on a who’s who of downtown performance artists and nightlife luminaries.
