Letters from Rehearsal: A Meditation on a Rite of Spring (working title) Day 6
I woke up this morning feeling busy. Not that I accomplished much… Boiling sweet potatoes and beets, checking in with my daughter Mieke, wondering if I should go to the gym, I didn’t…
It was a relief to get into the van.. Ahhh relaxation. Laughter, discussing stories of David Bowie, Baryshnikov, birthdays, and high kicks, my favorite memory of requesting Shayla do 42 high kicks on my last birthday:)
We arrived at Gerrard Hall and got ready for class. Janet moving through sequences with encouragement, rigor and we were instantly sweating… I love the heat.
We ended class learning all 45 shapes of Continuous Replay and I imagined how much fun we are going to have being together in this piece – naked, frantic, calm, in black and white. How we will experience this piece together – I imagine can only be fun.
After our ten minute break we pushed forward with Janet to the section following the Auger’s. The Mock Abduction.. Eric so free, so willing to be abducted, caught, and all of us wanting to catch him. It went by so fast and 10 minutes til lunch. Anne passed out text dictated and chosen from our individual interviews following our dances to the death. Re- reading them I wanted to get back to the determined or somewhat purged way I delivered the answers the day before. Just speak, just speak? Just speak! Or just…. speak…
Happy Birthday to Stephen! Yummy cupcakes for all!
Three fans arrived after lunch. All I could think about after Kris informed us about the Statius of air conditioning was “if they turn the air conditioning on we won’t be able to control the temperature and it will be freezing! No!”
The Spring Rounds…. Aikiko so radiant and peaceful, trusting. The ritual of the stools, I could have done that through the day more more….of course some of us… we tend to take joy over the top and found many new and exciting movements and partnerings with the stools.
15 minute break and we switched to working on the possible beginning structure with Anne. We started by having our texts (given to us earlier in the day) delivered in our ears and we repeated what we heard… Hearing the text from behind us, our ears, our minds… Memory. I enjoyed telling Aikiko hers, the tension in my body and sweating because i did not want to escape from the position i chose to be in my body, and hearing, then telling, gave a nice separation to what was personal text – and I could let go of the redoing and feel how it might be to be in a new improvisation, in the moment. I love hearing everyone speak, seeing everyone listening following a task being themselves and maybe something else too? Ellen as Severine.
Paring down the structure – deconstructing, and simultaneously re re re constructing the deconstructing structure with memory and history, now time and connection. A living breathing line of 15 stools…
Now we go to Social Hour – in which my report shall not continue……. 🙂
I hope this finds you well…..
