Ari Frankel ~ cameral music

Composer/Writer Ari Frankel moves with passion and ease between opera (Lot’s Daughters And Their Father), new-age (Suzanne Ciani’s Grammy-nominated Neverland) and contemporary solo piano (SHATTERED, hymns for mortal creatures). Classically trained – among his teachers have been Arie Shapira, Andre Hajdu, Lukas Foss, and Joshua Rifkin – Ari also played in and produced new-wave bands, wrote commercials, scored quality children’s television and sound designed films. His works have gained kudos in Europe and America, including Bourges’ Concours Internationale de Musique Electroacoustique, The International Film & TV Festival of New York, and multiple Parent’s Choice awards.

Through his love for dance, theatre, and movement, Ari has explored themes from The Tibetan Book Of The Dead, T.S. Eliot, Anne Sexton, Primo Levi, Samuel Beckett, Ezra Pound, Franz Kafka and many others. Collaborators have included Rina Schenfeld, Tero Saarinen, Muna Tseng, LaMama, Marijeanne Liederbach, Susan Batson and Elizabeth Kemp at The Actors Studio, William H. Macy at The Atlantic Theater, John Kelly, and Fiona Shaw. His music has been heard in Boston, Chicago, Houston, Princeton, Los Angeles, England, France, Italy, Germany, Israel, Sweden, Holland, Austria, Japan and Poland. New York performances have included The Kitchen, The Joyce Theatre, Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, Dia Center For The Arts, SummerStage at Central Park, Washington Square Church, and Dancing In The Streets at Chinatown.

The New York Times described one of his many works for dance as a “haunting collage of sounds, original and popular music”. The Glasgow Herald felt “true passion” in another work and The London Times marveled at “light seeming materials build[ing] an overwhelming effect”. Following his “DanceWorks” CD, Ari recorded his original “wiping ceramic tiles” songs for counter-tenor & piano with James Bowman in London. He is currently reComposing the work for Andreas Scholl and strings. Guests on his “Sketches of Sleep” jazz lullabye recording project will include George Wein and Ron Carter, Madeleine Peyroux, Jane Monheit, Kim Nazarian and Peter Eldrige of New York Voices, and Broadway’s Luba Mason. Future plans include a “Dowland ReComposed” project for Scholl, a Nietzsche requiem, “The Beckett Variations” for voice, string quartet & piano, and VANISH, a Francis Bacon oratorio-opera.
