Lobby Talks: Artist Run Spaces

Coordinated by Chase Granoff in collaboration with Brian Rogers

New York Live Arts’ Lobby Talks series presents Artist-Run Spaces, a conversation on artist-initiated and operated organizations, coordinated by Chase Granoff in collaboration with Brian Rogers. The panelists include Mathew Pokoik and Aynsley Vandenbroucke of Mount Tremper Arts; Andrew Dinwiddie and Jeff Larson of Catch; and Jill McDermid-Hokanson and Erik Hokanson of Grace Exhibition Space.

Artist-run spaces have a rich and important history in the contemporary dance and performance community. Many of the presenting organizations we are familiar with today were originally founded and operated by artists on a grassroots level. This conversation will examine how these efforts evolve into established organizations by looking at the infrastructure of some of today’s artist-run spaces. The panelists will share what their organizations aim to accomplish and how they thrive in this current economic and political moment.

Originally created by Dance Theater Workshop, Lobby Talks creates a forum for open and in-depth discourse on contemporary issues in dance and performance. Conceptual themes are investigated, challenged, and considered by an invited group of artists, critics, and theorists, and discussions are open to all who would like to participate.
