“Lar Lubovitch understands profoundly the irreducible essence of dance: bodies propelled through designs in space and time.” – Elizabeth Zimmer, The Village Voice

During the 1970’s, choreographer Lar Lubovitch was among the first to explore the kinetic potential of minimalist music in a series of six dances set to compositions by Steve Reich and Philip Glass. His mastery changed how choreography relates to its musical score, and confirmed Lar as a visionary in modern dance. In honor of his company’s 40th anniversary, we are presenting three of these seminal works: Marimba (1976), North Star (1978), and Cavalcade (1980). North Star will be performed by an ensemble of dancers from the senior class at The Juilliard School.

The remounts of Marimba (1976), North Star (1978), and Cavalcade (1980) are supported by the Bessie Schönberg/First Light Commissioning and Creative Residency Program of Dance Theater Workshop with support from the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Jerome Robbins Foundation. Dance Theater Workshop‘s presentation of North Star is supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts’ American Masterpieces: Dance initiative, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts. Additional support provided, in part, by American Express. This presentation is made possible, in part, by the generous support of Helen and Peter Haje through the David R. White Producers Circle.
