Arnie Zane
A Celebration of Arnie Zane
This day of celebration will include movement workshops, stories, performance, installation and will launch a year of remembering and re-introducing Arnie Zane: Artist.
Arnie Zane was a choreographer, dancer, one half of a famous partnership, co-founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. Lesser known was Arnie Zane the photographer and multi-genre/multimedia artist before his time. As Jonathan Green wrote in Continuous Replay: the photographs of Arnie Zane, his work explored “contradictory imperatives that would define his life and art: a pictorial, romantic aesthetic that resonates with his personality, sensibility and socio-political experience as a gay man; and equally compelling, an abiding concern with gesture, accident, and process that pushed him to constantly explore the primary operations of seriality and repetitive structures.” His body of work across the mediums reveal an aspiration and a roadmap. Bill T. Jones says, “I realized that, consciously or unconsciously, I have been following this roadmap that he had laid out for us all along.” 2018 marks both the 70th anniversary of his birth and the 30th of his passing.
The year of celebration will continue through 2019 with events on Gay Pride, an exhibition of Arnie Zane’s photography, conversations, online presence, and the reconstruction of Freedom of Information Part III led by Sean Curran at NYU Tisch which will go to UNC Greensboro, Loyola Marymount University and Rutgers University.
As this launches a multi-year project of re-call and research, we welcome stories, memorabilia, and ephemera related to Arnie Zane. Please send material to arniezanecelebration@newyorklivearts.org
