Born Dancing, Inc.
Born Dancing, Inc. is founded on the belief that dance education and performance can be inclusive and be better for it. Our mission is to produce inclusive professional quality dance performances that bring together a broad range of differently abled dancers. Born Dancing additionally creates dance education programs that provide Students With Disabilities in underserved NYC public schools with real-world performance and production experiences, apprenticeships to learn job and social skills, and internships in performing arts production to facilitate employment of people with disabilities.
Born Dancing’s education programs offer Students With Disabilities (2nd-12th Grade) dance classes that transition into rehearsals for performances. High School students may choose to study other elements of dance production and become an integral part of the production process by collaborating with working theater professionals as apprentices. These production aspects include costume design, lighting design, box office, videography, and stage management.
Following the preparation at the school, students come to the theater for a full week of real-world, on-site learning. Student-dancers perform in the shows alongside professionals and adult performers with (physical) disabilities. The other students assist the production team during technical rehearsals and backstage during the shows.
