Catherine Gallant/DANCE

At the core of our work lies a deep interest in the expressive power of human movement. Our process is a collaborative searching, by choreographer and dancers, for moments of off balance and discomfort …searching for questions that lead to new ways of moving and listening. We often use found movement material. Small pedestrian gestures are discovered through observing people in transit, in conversation, in thought and then combined with grand space devouring locomotion. These pure movement elements combined with meditations on family relationships, nature and the body, create a layered world for both performers and audiences.

Catherine Gallant, dancer, choreographer and teacher, has been creating and performing for more than 30 years. Recent choreographic projects were presented at Chashama (Anita’s Way), Joyce Soho ,The Yard, Green Space, Cunningham Studio and City Center Studios. In addition to traditional venues, Ms. Gallant has created works to be performed in train stations, urban passageways, abandoned piers, sandy beaches, rose bushes, church balconies and soccer fields. Ms. Gallant has received funding for her work from the Harkness Foundation for Dance, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Trust, City Parks Foundation and NYFA. As a performer in the 1980’s, Catherine appeared with the Limón Co., Ze'eva Cohen and Dancers, Anna Sokolow, and Muna Tseng.
