Degenerate Art Ensemble (Haruko Crow Nishimura and Joshua Kohl)

Degenerate Art Ensemble (DAE) was founded in Seattle in 1999 by dancer and Guggenheim fellow Haruko Crow Nishimura and composer Joshua Kohl. Through their concerts, dance and theater projects, and experimentations with public spaces, DAE reinvigorates and transforms the relationship between performer and audience, and challenges perceptions of music, theater, dance and installation. The ensemble has performed throughout North America and Europe, including at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle; Yerba Buena Arts Center, San Francisco; International Festival of Contemporary Dance, Mexico City; REDCAT, Los Angeles; Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York. DAE’s collaborations included work with Robert Wilson and the Kronos Quartet among many notable others. They are recipients of the Artist Trust’s 2020 Arts Innovator Award and have received awards from Creative Capital, MAP Fund, New Music USA and the International Theatre Institute’s Music Theatre Now Award. In addition to DAE’s Nishimura and Kohl being core collaborators in this project, Degenerate Art Ensemble’s full team of designers and technicians join Juni One Set to create Boy mother / faceless bloom. DAE is based in Seattle.
