Shamar Watt

Shamar Watt is an interdisciplinary artist born in Kingston, Jamaica, and is based New York City.
Since 2015, he has collaborated with artist nora chipaumire and worked with sculptor/filmmaker
Matthew Barney in 2023. Named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2019, Watt was a
2018 Bessie nominee and received the 2019 Bessie Award for Outstanding Performance.

His work merges sound, movement, and materials into immersive, multi-sensory experiences.
He describes his work as “spiritual entertainment,” a liberatory practice centered on
transformation and collective memory; he interrogates the fluidity of the Black body and their
shadows. Watt’s work engages the complexities and contradictions of the Caribbean condition,
aiming to provoke alternative imaginaries and social relations.

Watt invites witnesses to feel and inhabit worlds beyond conventional limits, engaging presence
together as pathways to liberation.
