the CURRENT SESSIONS/Alexis Convento

“…a true breeding ground for artists.”
-Matthew O'Donnell, DIY Dancer, July 2012

The CURRENT SESSIONS is a contemporary dance series which showcases works from choreographers in NYC + beyond.

The CURRENT SESSIONS was conceived in July 2011 to bring like-minded contemporary choreographers together and present work that is in-the-moment and reflective of our current state of mind and process. To this end, all works are created and presented within a time period of just six weeks. We are interested in producing works that are fresh, raw, experimental and curious; we want to provide our audience with a glimpse of what dance is right now, and what the future generation of dancemakers has to offer.

Our mission is to present high-caliber dance works by groundbreaking choreographers in New York City that show original creative flow, take risks, and are reflective of the current working process and aesthetic of the artist, while serving as an incubator for the furtherance of each choreographer's artistic vision.

Alexis Convento, originally from Philadelphia, PA, is Founder, Creative Director and Producer of the CURRENT SESSIONS, a contemporary dance series which showcases works from choreographers in New York City and beyond. Alexis holds a BFA in Dance from the Ailey/Fordham Partnership (2008). Additional training includes the School at Jacob’s Pillow (Contemporary Traditions), LINES Ballet, and the Joffrey Ballet. Alexis is also Artistic Director of Alexis Convento & Artists, a contemporary/improvisational dance company based in NYC. As a choreographer, her works have been presented at: Dixon Place, WestFest Dance Festival, Chen Dance Center’s Newsteps Choreographer’s Series, the CURRENT SESSIONS, Young Choreographer’s Festival, and Baruch Performing Arts Center, among others. Alexis is also on faculty at the Joffrey Ballet School, teaching Composition & Improv to the students of the Jazz & Contemporary Program. Since founding the CURRENT SESSIONS in July 2011, Alexis has become increasingly interested in providing new, enriching opportunities and experiences for freelance dance professionals. Alexis believes in collaboration between organizations, dialogue across genres, and building partnerships within the dance community to form a web of endless possibilities.
