2019 SEASON IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF UTAH DANCE
Be prepared for a blast of fresh air when Michele Wiles’ BalletNext returns to New York Live Arts, February 19-23. Look out for the debut of a crop of new dancers hand-picked from the University of Utah’s professional ballet program, where Wiles is currently a Visiting Professor. These stars-in-the-making will join Wiles and principal guest artists Amar Ramasar, Maria Kowroski and others to perform three new ballets by Wiles set to live music performed by classical pianist Dr. Vedrana Subotic and soprano Elizabeth Pojanowski. Also on the boards is a world premiere to a commissioned score by Wiles’ ongoing collaborator master jazz trumpeter Tom Harrell.
Wiles curates an evening that celebrates and provides an actionable platform for unique emerging talent of today’s ballet world. The professional level of University of Utah’s dancers inspired Michele to go back to the roots of BalletNext and reset Mauro Bigonzetti’s “La Folia with its fusion of grounded rounded modernism and strong ballet technique” (The New Yorker). With this vision, Wiles also choreographed the three additional new works.
