Barnard/Columbia Dances
Sasha Waltz, Jennifer Archibald, Joanna Kotze, David Thomson
This fall’s edition of Barnard/Columbia Dances at NewYork Live Arts features three world premieres and a revival of Sasha Waltz’s Fantasie, the first time this work by Germany’s leading dance-theater icon has been performed by American college dancers. The premieres are by Jennifer Archibald, whose choreography reveals an array of movement styles, including ballet, street, funk, and lyrical, melded into contemporary high-energy performances full of human expression and soul; South Africa-born Joanna Kotze, whose work explores the potential of the body in movement, challenging the habitual, while also examining the potential for hybridity across artistic disciplines; David Thomson, whose work exists at the intersection of movement, text, sound, and song, mining unconscious narratives to reframe actions and create alternative perspectives. Produced by the Barnard College Department of Dance and performed by Barnard and Columbia University students, this concert marks the twelfth season of the College’s collaboration with New York Live Arts, located in the heart of Chelsea.
