The Journey Continues

New York Live Arts Lobby
Sept 2018 – May 2019
Derrick Adams: The Journey Continues emerged from Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams’s continued research into the archive of the influential African-American fashion designer Patrick Kelly (1954–1990), housed at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Featuring abstract collage works on paper framed with glazing.

At the center of The Journey Continues is Adams’s “Mood Board” series, a collection of pieces in response to Kelly’s formalist presentation, which was informed by social commentary and humor. These abstract collages utilize Kelly’s vintage clothing patterns, as well as his iconic fabrics, striking palettes, and geometric profiles. The installation pays homage to Kelly’s formal prowess while displaying Adams’ continued exploration of deconstructing, and manipulating structure and surface.
