The Dance Cartel // Choreographer Ani Taj
The Dance Cartel is after a new brand of dance experience. Taking note of a dance community that often serves a niche audience, the Cartel creates dances that are vibrant, immersive, and often participatory. Without sacrificing technical rigor or artistic ambition as a dance company, we endeavor to employ the social nature of dance, the charge of a party, and the sharpness of a music video to a fresh dance vocabulary that any Joe can get down with.
A native New Yorker, Ani Taj is a choreographer, performer, music-head and founder of The Dance Cartel. She has choreographed new musicals, plays, concerts, music videos, art parties, flash mobs, and she loves to make dances that remind her of Brazilian Carnaval.
Ani’s work has been presented at the Ace Hotel New York, Rattlestick Theatre, 3LD, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Joe’s Pub, Kent285, Summer on the Hudson, Dance on the Greenway, NYC Dance Teacher Summit, DanceNOW’s Raw Festival, Triskelion Arts, and the Espaco Xisto (Salvador da Bahia, Brazil). Upcoming: music videos for Reggie Watts and The Sway Machinery.
As a performer, Ani has worked with Les Freres Corbusier (DDR – Asst. Choreo.), The Ridge Theater/Philadelphia Orchestra (Rite of Spring – choreo. Dan Safer), David Dorfman Dance, Reggie Watts & Tommy Smith, Simone Forti, Jenny Koons, and Liz Swados.
