Felix Gonzalez-Torres
Untitled (Fortune Cookie Corner)
Andrea Rosen Gallery and David Zwirner gallery, honoring the “globally significant moment and in reflection of the ever-relevant and flexible nature of Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s work,” welcomed 1,000 diverse invitees earlier this month to be part of an expansive, physical exhibition of Gonzalez-Torres’ work.
The lobby at New York Live Arts will serve as one of many official installation sites of “Untitled” (Fortune Cookie Corner), 1990 by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. The piece features an “endless supply of fortune cookies” (approximately 10,000, given the 1,000 different sites of the exhibition) installed in a corner of the owner’s choosing. According to Rosen, the piece asks questions especially pertinent to this time of pandemics and civil unrest: how has this historic moment shifted our perceptions of public and private space? How does this lead us to think about ideas of accessibility? And in what ways do we limit our individual senses of responsibility relating to private versus public space?
Every site of “Untitled” (Fortune Cookie Corner) will ceremoniously be replenished on Sunday, June 14 and will be on view in the Live Arts lobby until July 5. To view the exhibition’s progress, follow @felixgonzaleztorres.foundation on social media and #FGT?exhibition.
